If you see one place outside Chișinău, make it Orheiul Vechi. It is a natural and historical complex set on a meander of the river Răut, about an hour from the capital, and a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list.
What you see
The landscape itself is the attraction: limestone banks dropping to the water, on which settlements and places of worship have been established over the centuries. The focal point is the cave monastery — a church and cells cut directly into the rock, with a discreet entrance in the hillside. From the plateau above you get one of the finest views in Moldova, especially at sunrise or sunset.
A place inhabited for millennia
Orheiul Vechi is not just landscape. This meander has held, one after another, Getic settlements, a medieval Tatar fortress and a Moldavian market town. Excavations have brought to light traces from all these periods, which makes the place layer upon layer of history, not merely a fine view.
The villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni
At the foot of the complex, the villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni seem stopped in time: whitewashed houses, stone walls, smallholdings. Here you will find guesthouses where you can stay the night and eat home cooking — a more authentic experience than any hotel. Many guesthouses also organise traditional meals or workshops if you give notice in advance.
Getting there
Orheiul Vechi is about 60 km from Chișinău. By car it takes roughly an hour. A word of warning: the town of Orhei and the Orheiul Vechi complex are two different places — the complex lies next to the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni, a few kilometres from the town. There are also organised tours from Chișinău if you are not driving.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal, when the light is soft and the greenery or the colours make the landscape memorable. Summer can be hot, but mornings and evenings are pleasant. Take water and comfortable shoes — part of the visit means walking a path and climbing to the plateau.

Practical tips
Come early in the morning or towards evening, for good light and fewer people. Wear comfortable shoes for the path up to the plateau and take water, especially in summer. Entry to the cave monastery requires modest dress. And set aside at least half a day: the place is best taken slowly, not in a rush, and the view from the plateau deserves lingering over. If you stay the night at a guesthouse in Butuceni, you catch both the sunset and the sunrise over the bend of the Răut — the finest moments of the day here.
