Mănăstirea Rudi
The Holy Trinity monastery in the village of Rudi, Soroca district, about 41 km from the town. A complex in a wooded valley in the north of the country, with permanent access and parking — the natural extension of a day at Soroca fortress.
Mănăstirea Noul Neamț
A large monastic complex in the east of the Republic of Moldova, near Hagimus, on the left bank of the Dniester. Very wide visiting hours, daily from 05:30 to 22:00, flat grounds, adapted parking and a wheelchair-accessible entrance — a visit with no physical effort.
Mănăstirea Japca
A monastery on the Dniester bank, in the north of the Republic of Moldova, at the edge of the village of Japca. Little visited, without tourist infrastructure and without confirmed public opening hours — a stop for those seeking quiet, not facilities.
Mănăstirea Hâncu
A 17th-century monastery in the Codri area, west of Chișinău. One of the few in the country where guided tours of the interiors and of the artistic heritage are organised. Easy access, no physical effort.
Mănăstirea Căpriana
One of the oldest foundations in the Republic of Moldova, in the Codri area west of Chișinău. Several buildings from different periods, a library and a fully accessible complex — a short visit with no physical effort.
Mănăstirea Țipova
A cave monastery carved into the limestone of the Dniester bank, with cells and a cave system dated to the 11th century — one of the oldest and largest in Eastern Europe. Access on foot only, with about 200 m of elevation difference.
1776Mănăstirea Saharna
The Holy Trinity monastery, founded in 1776, in a gorge with a waterfall of roughly 4 metres and the cavity known as the "Gypsy's Pit". One of the largest pilgrimage centres in the country and, unlike Țipova, easy to visit.
Mănăstirea Curchi
The largest monastic complex in the Codri area, about 58 km from Chișinău. Two churches, an extensive park and a surfaced road right into the courtyard — the easiest large monastery to visit in half a day, with no physical effort.
Why so many sit above the Dniester
Moldova’s oldest hermitages were not built but dug — straight into the limestone of the steep Dniester bank. The soft stone was easy to work, and the height and awkward access sheltered the monks in unsettled times. At Țipova the cells climb the cliff in stages above the water; at Saharna the monastery stands at the head of a gorge with waterfalls.
The great princely foundations came later, raised in stone and brick. Căpriana, one of the oldest, is tied to the name of Ștefan cel Mare, while Curchi — nicknamed the „Jerusalem of Moldova" — impresses by sheer scale. Many spent the Soviet period as warehouses or hospitals and were only restored after 1991.
Visiting a monastery

- Photography is usually allowed outside, but not always indoors — follow the signs.
- Most monasteries are working communities — keep quiet and respect the daily offices.
