Two engines: wine and IT
For a long time Moldova’s economy ran on what the land gives: grapes, fruit, walnuts, grain. Wine remains the country’s signature product and one of its most important exports, and the opening towards the European market pushed the wineries to compete on quality, not only on volume.
The second engine appeared more recently. Moldova IT Park, launched in 2018 as a virtual park with a simple tax regime — a single tax — attracted software and outsourcing firms and put Chișinău on the regional map of the technology sector. For a landlocked country, exporting digital services is a route that does not depend on roads or ports.
