The writers who defended a language

In Bessarabia, writing in Romanian was for a long time an act with something at stake. Under the Russian Empire and later during the Soviet period, the language was pushed to the margins — the Cyrillic alphabet was imposed on it, and even a different name. That is precisely why poets carry a different weight here. Alexei Mateevici wrote „Limba noastră" (Our Language) in 1917, at the age of 29; several of its stanzas later became the state anthem.

The generation of Grigore Vieru and Ion Druță carried the same theme forward, and at the end of the 1980s the language stood at the centre of the movement that led to the return of the Latin script in 1989. It is no accident that the country’s largest cultural celebration, „Limba noastră", is held on 31 August.
