On the first weekend of October, the centre of Chișinău empties of cars and fills with barrels. National Wine Day is not a niche festival for collectors: it is the day an entire country puts its wine on the table, in the main square, two days after the harvest has finished. If you have a single weekend to spend in Moldova and you can choose the date, this is the weekend.
When and where
The celebration is held annually on the first weekend of October, in Great National Assembly Square in the centre of Chișinău — the space in front of the Government building, on Ștefan cel Mare boulevard. The 23rd edition took place on 5–6 October 2024.
The exact date and the programme are announced each time by the organisers, a few weeks in advance. Do not go by what you read last year: opening hours, stages and the list of participants change from year to year. Check official sources before you buy your plane ticket.
One thing that does not change: it is outdoors, in October, in a country with a continental climate. It can be 8 degrees in the morning and 22 in the afternoon. Layers, not an overcoat.
How it is organised
The square turns into a temporary city of wine. More than 60 producers set up their stands — from the large houses exporting to dozens of countries to family wineries making a few thousand bottles a year that you will not find in any supermarket.
It all sits under the "Wine of Moldova" umbrella, the national country brand of Moldovan wine. In practice, it is the only place and moment where you can taste, in a single afternoon, a cross-section of the entire industry: the south with its powerful reds, the centre with its aromatic whites, the small producers experimenting with native varieties.
Alongside the tasting stands, recent editions have included:
- food areas, with chefs and producers of cheese, charcuterie and home-made goods;
- workshops and guided tastings, where an oenologist explains what is in your glass;
- traditional crafts — pottery, weaving, basketwork;
- stages with music, from folk to contemporary bands.
Exactly what happens in any given year, at what hour and with whom on stage — that is confirmed only in the official programme. Do not build your plan on what an old blog says.
How to make the most of it
Arrive with a glass, leave with a strategy. The usual format is a tasting glass you are given and carry from stand to stand. Do not try to tick off all 60 stands — it cannot be done, and that is not the point. Choose three or four directions: a native variety, a large winery, two small wineries, a sparkling wine.
Start with the whites. The order matters more than you think when you have dozens of samples in front of you. Fetească Albă and Viorica in the morning, reds in the afternoon. If you open with a mature Fetească Neagră, the rest of the day will taste like water.
Eat before and during. The food areas are not decoration. A plăcintă (filled pastry) and some cheese between samples make the difference between a good day and a lost evening. If you want to understand what goes with what, Moldovan cuisine is built around exactly these wines.
Take notes. It sounds like snobbery until you have tried it. By the twelfth glass you no longer remember which was the one you liked. A photo of the label, a line in your phone, done.
Do not drive. It is the simplest rule and the most often broken. Chișinău has cheap taxis and a compact centre; check the transport options in advance so you are not improvising at one in the morning.
What to do with the rest of the weekend
Wine Day lasts two days, but many producers also keep their doors open at the winery during that period. Since you have made the journey, it is worth seeing the original, not just the stand.
Cricova is some 15 kilometres from the centre and shows you what dozens of kilometres of underground galleries look like. Mileștii Mici has the collection that earned it the world record. To the south, Purcari is another world — hills, a lake, serious reds. And Castel Mimi is the most spectacular winery building in the country, an hour from Chișinău.

Accommodation: book early
This is the one practical piece of advice we repeat insistently. Wine Day weekend is, together with the winter holidays, the period of greatest pressure on accommodation in Chișinău. The diaspora comes home, tourists come for the festival, and the city does not have a vast stock of rooms.
If you know you are going, block the room months in advance. The closer to the centre you want to be, the earlier you have to move — on that weekend, the distance to Great National Assembly Square is worth more than an extra star.
What nobody tells you
It is a city celebration, not just a tourist one. Families come with children, people who work in the trade come, grandparents come. It is not a festival with an expensive ticket and a filtered crowd. That is what gives it its charm, and it is also what makes it crowded.
The small producers are the good part. You can find the big houses any time, in any shop. The small stands, with two people behind them who made the wine themselves, are the real reason to come. Ask them what the variety is, where the vineyard is, why they chose it. In Moldova, people answer.
October is the best month anyway. Even if you miss the festival weekend, the whole month is winemaking season. The hills are in colour, the wineries are at full tilt, and the air smells of must.

- the access format and any costs;
- the list of participating producers;
- the programme on the stages and at the workshops;
- traffic restrictions in central Chișinău that weekend.
