Light industry
A tradition in textiles
The textile and clothing industry is a strong traditional sector, with factories producing for European brands under outward processing (lohn) arrangements. It also includes the footwear and leather goods industry, with a skilled workforce.
Light industry is one of the oldest and most stable industrial branches of the Republic of Moldova, with a well-established tradition in clothing, textiles and footwear. The sector is an important employer, particularly of the female workforce, and is concentrated in the north and centre of the country, with strong centres in Bălți, Chișinău and the smaller towns.
Production under lohn arrangements
A large part of production takes place under lohn arrangements, that is, as outward processing for Western brands, especially from Italy, Germany and other European Union countries. Moldovan factories make clothing, lingerie, suits and footwear for well-known fashion houses, drawing on the quality of the workmanship and competitive costs.
Towards own brands
Gradually, domestic companies have begun to develop their own labels and collections, moving from simple execution to design and finished product. Geographical proximity to the European market and the free trade agreement with the European Union give the sector a logistical and commercial advantage for exports.
