A transit gateway
Moldova's position between the European Union and the eastern space gives it a transit role. Giurgiulești International Free Port — the country's only port, with access to the Danube and, through it, to the Black Sea — is a strategic logistics node for trade and transport.
Trade, logistics and transport occupy a central place in the economy of the Republic of Moldova, being the branches that connect domestic production to external markets. Trade accounts for a significant share of GDP and of employment.
Orientation towards the European Union
Since the entry into force of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union, the bloc has become Moldova's main trading partner. This has reoriented export flows from the space of the former Soviet Union towards Western European markets, especially Romania, Italy and Germany.
Transport infrastructure
Moldova has a network of roads and railways that ensures transit between the European Union and the eastern space. Giurgiulești Port, the country's only port, located at the confluence of the Prut with the Danube, gives Moldova access to international waterways and to the Black Sea, and is a strategic point for the import and export of bulk and containerised goods.
