Defileul Trinca

Defileul Trinca lies in Edineț district, in the north of the Republic of Moldova, south-west of the village of Trinca, in the valley of the river Draghiște. It is a natural monument of geological and palaeontological type, protected by the state since 1975 and reconfirmed by the Law on the fund of protected natural areas (1998). The gorge is part of the Trinca–Fetești–Burlănești natural complex, one of the most spectacular karst areas of the northern Moldovan plateau.

What you see here

The gorge was formed by the erosive action of the waters of the Draghiște on a limestone reef of Badenian–Volhynian age, laid down millions of years ago, when the present-day territory of Moldova was covered by a warm sea. Today the observer discovers sheer rock walls, some 40 metres high, rising above the valley along almost half a kilometre, the gorge measuring around 250 metres in width. The whitish-yellow rocks, sculpted by wind and water, alternate with grottoes and natural niches, offering a landscape of particular beauty, especially in spring and autumn. The protected area extends over approximately 70 hectares and is classified as a natural monument of geological and palaeontological importance.

Palaeontological importance

The caves in the limestone massif have drawn the attention of researchers through their traces of habitation from the Middle Palaeolithic, attributed to the Mousterian culture and tens of thousands of years old, when these grottoes served as shelter for Neanderthals. In their deposits, hundreds of bone remains belonging to Quaternary fauna have been identified, among them numerous cave bear bones, alongside other mammal species now extinct. These discoveries make Trinca an important reference for the study of prehistoric life in the region and a landmark for archaeologists and palaeontologists throughout the country.

Flora and fauna

On the sunny slopes grows a rock-formation and petrophilic steppe vegetation, adapted to thin soils and sun exposure, with rare plant species that survive on the limestone ground. The quiet of the gorge shelters rock birds and a small fauna specific to stony areas. The place has a pronounced cognitive, educational and ecotourism value, and is recommended for hiking and for observing the geological formations.

Getting there

Access is from the village of Trinca, situated near the town of Edineț. The gorge does not yet have a developed tourist infrastructure, so a visit calls for comfortable footwear and caution on the rocky ground. In the surroundings it is also worth exploring the complex's other gorges, at Fetești and Burlănești, where similar grottoes and rocks are found, as well as the traditional villages of northern Moldova. The most suitable seasons for hiking are spring and autumn, when the vegetation does not cover the rocks and the soft light brings out the sculpted relief of the limestone walls.
