The Țaul dendrological park is the largest park in the Republic of Moldova, situated in the southern part of the village of Țaul, Dondușeni district. Extending over more than 46 hectares, the park is a monument of landscape architecture protected by the state and one of the most valuable ensembles of its kind in the north of the country, with a history spanning more than a century.
The history of the park
The park was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the banker Andrei Iacob Pommer, a native of France, who had worked at the National Savings Bank in Saint Petersburg and had settled in Bessarabia after marrying the daughter of a local boyar. To lay out the park, Pommer invited the engineer-decorator Ipolit Vladislavski-Padalka, a graduate of the Horticulture School in Odesa, who designed the landscape composition with walkways, vistas and carefully chosen groups of trees. The laying-out works began in the first decade of the 20th century, and since then the park has matured, the trees planted in the founder's day now reaching imposing dimensions.
Dendrological wealth
Țaul holds the richest collection of exotic trees and shrubs among Moldova's parks — almost 150 species of conifers and broadleaves of foreign origin. Of these, around 97 species come from Eurasia and 28 from North America, to which are added species from the native flora. To these are added some 37 species from the native flora, so that the park becomes a veritable living museum of trees. Visitors can admire pines, spruces, firs, thuja, larch and numerous ornamental broadleaves, arranged in landscape settings that alternate open areas with dense plantings. The diversity of conifers, rarely encountered here, makes the park a point of reference for dendrology enthusiasts.

The park combines the free, English-inspired style with geometric sectors of French type, crossed by walkways and completed by the sheen of a pond. Nearby stand the preserved buildings of the family's former manor house, which round out the period atmosphere of the place. In autumn, when the conifers and broadleaves change their hues, the park offers a landscape of particular beauty.
Getting there
The park lies at the edge of the village of Țaul, reachable from the town of Dondușeni, in the north of the country. Entry is free, and the walk along the shaded avenues and around the pond can be combined with visits to the villages of northern Moldova, known for their hospitality and traditions. The finest seasons for a visit are spring, when the park comes to life, and autumn, when the colouring of the foliage offers a remarkable display.
