Mircea Snegur

Mircea Snegur (b. 17 January 1940, Trifănești – d. 13 September 2023) was an agronomist and politician, the first president of the Republic of Moldova, leading the country through the period of transition from the Soviet regime to independence, between 1990 and 1996. His role in the proclamation of independence and in the consolidation of Moldovan statehood places him among the founding figures of the modern Republic of Moldova.

Education and career

Born in a village in northern Bessarabia, Snegur graduated in 1961 from the State Agrarian University of Moldova, where he later also defended his doctorate in agricultural sciences, in 1972. He worked as an agronomist and as director of a collective farm, and from the 1980s he rose through the party hierarchy, becoming in 1985 secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova. In 1989 he was elected president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.

The presidency

On 3 September 1990, Mircea Snegur became the first president of the Republic of Moldova. Under his leadership, the country went through the decisive stages of separation from the Soviet Union: on 3 September 1991 he created the National Army, and Moldova proclaimed its independence on 27 August 1991. In 1992, the Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations Organization. It was also during his mandate that the armed conflict in Transnistria took place, following which the ceasefire agreement was signed in July 1992.

Legacy

Snegur led the country during a particularly complicated period, marked by economic, political and territorial challenges. He died on 13 September 2023, at the age of 83, and President Maia Sandu decreed a day of national mourning. He remains in history as the man who promoted the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova in its formative years.

The first president

As the first president of the Republic of Moldova, Mircea Snegur led the country through the founding moments of its statehood: the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, the creation of national institutions and accession to the United Nations Organization. He also ran in the 1996 presidential elections, which he lost, subsequently withdrawing from the front line of politics. Recognized for his historical role, he was decorated with the state's highest distinctions. His memory is bound to the difficult but decisive years of the birth of the independent Republic of Moldova.
