Bălți is a municipality and the second-largest and second most important city in the Republic of Moldova after the capital, being the main urban, economic, industrial and cultural centre of the north of the country. Because of this regional role, the city is often nicknamed the "northern capital" of Moldova. As an administrative-territorial unit with the special status of a municipality, Bălți was constituted in its current form in 1995 and includes, besides the city itself, the suburban villages of Elizaveta and Sadovoe, situated in its immediate vicinity.
Geography
The municipality covers an area of about 78 km², in the north of the country, on the Moldavian Plateau. It is crossed by the river Răut, a tributary of the Dniester, which also gave the city its name — "bălți", meaning marshy land, once found in the river's floodplain. The relief is generally flat, which favoured urban development and the siting of industrial enterprises.
Population and economy
The population of the municipality was about 102,500 inhabitants at the 2014 census, with a high density characteristic of a large urban centre. The ethnic composition is diverse, reflecting the multinational character of the north. Bălți is an important rail and road hub and a strong industrial centre: enterprises operating here include CET-Nord (thermal power), Incomlac (food industry), Knauf-Gips (building materials), as well as the Bălți Free Economic Zone, which has attracted investment in manufacturing and created numerous jobs.
Heritage and cultural life
The municipality hosts "Alecu Russo" State University, one of the most important higher education institutions outside the capital, and the "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre. Among the city's monuments are several Orthodox churches, including the Cathedral of "St Hierarch Nicholas", as well as architectural ensembles from the interwar period, which recall the city's era of flourishing. The city is also an important educational and medical centre for the entire northern region, serving a population that extends well beyond the municipality's limits. With a history reaching back towards medieval Moldavia — the settlement having been documented for centuries and having seen strong development in the interwar period, when it was a county seat — and with sustained modern development, Bălți remains the urban, economic and cultural reference point of the entire Moldovan north.
