Criuleni district lies in the central-eastern part of the Republic of Moldova, about 40 km from the capital Chișinău, and is part of the Centre Development Region. Its seat is the town of Criuleni, situated on the bank of the Dniester. The district borders the municipality of Chișinău and the districts of Strășeni, Orhei, Dubăsari and Anenii Noi, and to the east it adjoins, along the Dniester, the Transnistrian region.
Geography
The territory occupies the eastern edge of the Codri Plateau and the north of the Dniester plain, with varied relief: narrow ridges alternating with broad, deep valleys. Altitudes descend from about 265 metres on the watersheds to approximately 40 metres in the Dniester floodplain. The district's area is approximately 688 km², and the population, according to 2024 data, was about 52,926 inhabitants, with a density of roughly 77 inhabitants per km². The population is mostly Moldovan/Romanian, with small Ukrainian and Russian communities. The subsoil contains deposits of limestone, sand, gravel and clay.
Economy
The district's economy has an agro-industrial character, with agriculture employing a large share of the active population. Cereals, sunflower, grapevines, vegetables and fruit trees are grown, and proximity to Chișinău has stimulated vegetable growing and the supply of the capital's market. The building materials industry makes use of local mineral resources, alongside the processing of agricultural products, transport and trade.

Among the district's attractions is the "Cave of Surprises", a natural attraction popular with tourists, as well as the picturesque banks of the Dniester. The villages preserve old churches, manors and craft traditions.
History
The district's settlements are documented from the medieval period, the right bank of the Dniester having always been a border and trading area. In the interwar period the territory belonged to Romania, and after 1944 it was incorporated into the Moldavian SSR. Proximity to the Dniester marked the district's recent history, particularly in the context of the 1992 conflict, when the area lay in the immediate vicinity of the demarcation line. Set on the bank of the river, near the capital, Criuleni district combines the landscapes of the Dniester with a dynamic agriculture oriented towards the urban market of Chișinău.
