A district in north-western Moldova, along the Prut. Here, in the floodplain, lies part of the Pădurea Domnească — one of the oldest floodplain forests, with centuries-old oaks. The rest is farming country, with villages and orchards.
Fălești district lies in the north-western part of the Republic of Moldova, about 125 km from the capital Chișinău, and is part of the North Development Region. Its seat is the town of Fălești. The territory borders the districts of Glodeni, Sângerei, Ungheni and Râșcani, and through its proximity to the Prut it has cross-border links with Romania via the customs points at Sculeni and Costești.
Geography
The relief is hilly, with hills, meadows, lakes and ponds, in the transition zone between the plain and the north-western plateau of Moldova. The climate is temperate-continental, with four distinct seasons. Forests cover more than 11,000 hectares, and pastures extend over about 18,000 hectares. The district covers approximately 1,072 km², and the population, according to 2024 data, was around 56,039 inhabitants, with a density of about 52 inhabitants per km².
Economy
The district's economy is predominantly agricultural, the main branches being the cultivation of cereals, sugar beet, sunflower and grapevines, alongside fruit growing and animal husbandry. The food and agricultural processing industry makes use of the local harvest, and the border crossing points with Romania stimulate trade.
What to see
One of the district's most valuable sites is the "Pădurea Domnească" scientific reserve, stretching along the bank of the Prut, which protects floodplain forest ecosystems of great biodiversity, being among the oldest floodplain forests in Europe. The district's villages preserve churches and rural traditions, and the wetlands of the Prut floodplain shelter a rich bird fauna.
History
The settlement of Fălești is documented from the medieval period, being an old settlement of the Principality of Moldavia, on the roads linking the centre with the north-west of the country. Over time the territory belonged to the Bessarabia Governorate, and in the interwar period to Romania, within Bălți county. After 1944 it was incorporated into the Moldavian SSR, when it received town status. The border crossing points with Romania at Sculeni have always made the area a place of trade. Through its protected floodplain forests, its landscapes of hills and meadows and its agricultural vocation, Fălești district combines natural value with the rural economy of north-western Moldova.
