A district in the north of the country, on the bank of the Dniester, home to Japca Monastery — the largest convent in Moldova.
The Florești district lies in the north-eastern part of the Republic of Moldova and forms part of the North Development Region. Its seat is the town of Florești. The district borders the districts of Soroca, Drochia, Sângerei, Telenești, Șoldănești and Rezina, and is one of the more populated districts of the country's north.
Geography
The relief is plateau and hilly plain, in the area of the fertile chernozems of northern Moldova, cut by river valleys. The district covers approximately 1,108 km², and the population, according to the 2014 census, was about 76,457 inhabitants, with a density of approximately 69 inhabitants per km². The ethnic composition is mostly Moldovan/Romanian, with Ukrainian and Russian communities. Besides the town of Florești, the district also includes the towns of Ghindești and Mărculești.
Economy
The district's economy is predominantly agricultural and agro-industrial. The fertile soils favour the cultivation of cereals, sugar beet, sunflower and industrial crops, alongside viticulture and fruit growing. The agri-food processing industry makes use of the local harvest, and the town of Florești concentrates trade, services and transport.
History
The district's settlements are documented from the medieval period, the territory belonging to the northern lands of the Principality of Moldavia. In the interwar period the area formed part of Soroca County, within the Kingdom of Romania, and between 1944 and 1991 it belonged to the Moldavian SSR. The district's villages preserve old churches and manor houses, testimony to the troubled history of northern Bessarabia. The settlement of Mărculești has a history of its own, having formerly been an important market town with a large Jewish community, which suffered greatly during the Second World War.

Waters and ponds complete the area's natural setting, and the valleys of the rivers descending towards the Dniester offer remarkable landscapes. Besides the seat town of Florești, the district also includes the towns of Ghindești and Mărculești, each with its own character. Through its agro-industrial vocation, its historical heritage and its position in the heart of the northern chernozems, the Florești district remains one of the productive and populated territories of northern Moldova, with three towns and numerous economically active communes, representative of the agricultural wealth of this part of the country.
