Gagauzia, officially the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (ATU Gagauzia), is an administrative-territorial unit with special legal status within the Republic of Moldova. Its seat is the municipality of Comrat. The autonomy was established by law on 23 December 1994 (the Law on the special legal status of Gagauzia), as a peaceful solution to the self-determination aspirations of the Gagauz population, following the national movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Status and organisation
Gagauzia has its own governing bodies — the People's Assembly (the legislative body) and the Bashkan (the governor, who is also a member of the Government of the Republic of Moldova) — and enjoys autonomy in matters of culture, language, education and local development. A particular feature is that its territory is not unitary, but made up of several enclaves in the south of the country, surrounded by Moldovan districts. The official languages of the autonomy are Gagauz, Romanian and Russian.
Geography and population
With an area of approximately 1,848 km², the autonomy lies in the Budjak plain, a steppe region in southern Moldova, with a gently undulating relief and chernozem soils. The population was around 134,500 inhabitants at the 2014 census. The majority are the Gagauz, a people of Turkic language but of Christian Orthodox faith, who keep their identity alive, alongside Moldovans, Bulgarians, Ukrainians and Russians.

The main towns are Comrat, the political, cultural and university centre of the autonomy, seat of Comrat State University, followed by Ceadîr-Lunga and Vulcănești. The economy is predominantly agricultural, viticulture being the core branch; the region produces well-regarded wines, sunflower oil, textiles and wool. Gagauz traditions, dress, music, dances and cuisine, as well as its vineyards, give the autonomy a distinct cultural identity and a tourism potential that is developing rapidly within the landscape of the Republic of Moldova. Muzeul Național Găgăuz de Istorie și Etnografie
