A district in north-western Moldova, near the Pădurea Domnească reserve, along the Prut.
The Glodeni district lies in the north-western part of the Republic of Moldova and is part of the North Development Region. Its seat is the town of Glodeni. The territory borders the districts of Fălești, Râșcani and Sângerei, and through its proximity to the Prut it has links with Romania, in the country's western border area.
Geography
The relief is hilly, with an average altitude of about 250 metres, in the plateau and plain zone of north-western Moldova, fragmented by river valleys. The district covers roughly 754 km², and the population, according to the 2014 census, was around 51,306 inhabitants, with a density of about 68 inhabitants per km². The ethnic composition is mostly Moldovan/Romanian, with a large Ukrainian community and a Russian minority.
Economy
The district's economy is predominantly agricultural. Fertile soils favour the cultivation of cereals, sugar beet, sunflower and industrial crops, alongside fruit growing, viticulture and animal husbandry. Agri-food processing industry rounds out the local economy.
What to see
One of the district's most valuable sites is the "Pădurea Domnească" scientific reserve, which also extends over Glodeni territory, in the area of the village of Moara Domnească, where in 2006 several bison donated by Poland were brought in, restoring to the local fauna a species that had once disappeared. The reserve protects floodplain forests and wetlands along the Prut. The district has given culture notable figures, among them the literary critic Vasile Coroban and the soprano Valentina Naforniță, recognised on international opera stages.
History
The settlement of Glodeni is documented from the medieval period, being an old settlement of the Principality of Moldavia in the north-western area. Over time the territory belonged to the Bessarabia Governorate, and in the interwar period to Romania, within Bălți county. After 1944 it was integrated into the Moldavian SSR, when it received town status. The mixed ethnic composition, with a significant Ukrainian community, reflects the proximity to the north-western border. Through its floodplain forests, its reintroduced bison and its agricultural vocation, the Glodeni district combines natural value with the rural economy of north-western Moldova.
