Ialoveni District

The Ialoveni district lies in the central part of the Republic of Moldova, in the immediate vicinity of the capital, about 14 km from Chișinău, and forms part of the Centre Development Region. Its seat is the town of Ialoveni. Owing to its proximity to the municipality of Chișinău, the district has one of the highest population densities in the country and close economic ties with the capital. It borders the municipality of Chișinău and the districts of Strășeni, Hîncești, Cimișlia and Căușeni.

Geography

A good part of the territory is covered by the Codri forests, on the Central Moldavian Plateau. The rivers Botna and Ișnovăț, tributaries of the Dniester, flow through the district, and there are more than a hundred water bodies on its territory. The district covers approximately 784 km², and the population, according to 2024 data, was about 74,458 inhabitants, with a density of approximately 95 inhabitants per km², among the highest in the country. The subsoil contains limestone deposits, worked in a local quarry.

Economy

The district's economy is strongly tied to viticulture and winemaking, with numerous wineries operating here. The best-known site is the Mileștii Mici wine complex, whose underground galleries extend for about 200 km and house the largest wine collection in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Besides viticulture, the economy includes the food industry, light industry, limestone extraction and vegetable farming oriented towards the capital's market.

What to see

Among the district's attractions are the wineries at Mileștii Mici and Bardar, Suruceni Monastery, a monastic ensemble in traditional Moldovan style from the 19th century, as well as the ethnographic museums in the village of Văsieni and in other settlements. The Codri forests offer attractive natural settings.

History

The settlement of Ialoveni is documented from the medieval period, being an old settlement of the Principality of Moldavia in the Codri region. Over time the territory belonged to the Bessarabia Governorate, and in the interwar period to Romania, within Lăpușna County. After 1944 it was integrated into the Moldavian SSR. Proximity to the capital stimulated the development of the wine industry and turned the town into a rapidly expanding residential and economic area, one of the most densely populated in the country. Through its world-renowned wine heritage, its monasteries and its proximity to the capital, the Ialoveni district is one of the most visited destinations in central Moldova.
