Woodworking

Artistic woodworking is one of the oldest and most expressive crafts of folk culture in the Republic of Moldova. In a country where wood has always been one of the basic materials of the household, the hands of craftsmen turned the tree trunk into gates, porch posts, furniture, tools, vessels and objects of worship, each bearing the mark of a tradition passed from father to son over the centuries.

Gates and the peasant house

The carved wooden gate holds a special place: in folk culture it is not a simple decorative element, but a coded message. Each motif — the solar rosette, the twisted rope, the tree of life, the house serpent — had its own meaning, from protecting the household against evil to the family's prosperity and the hosts' hospitality. Porch posts, beams, porches and the eaves of houses were also skilfully notched, giving rural architecture a sober elegance and a distinctive character.

Techniques and objects

Craftsmen used a whole repertoire of procedures: hewing, notching, scoring, hollowing out, carving, fretwork, bending, blackening, pyrography and the painting of wood. From wood were made spoons, bowls, tubs, barrels, distaffs, toys and agricultural tools, but also church objects, wayside crosses, crosses and painstakingly worked iconostases. Woodworkers, coopers and spoon-makers were among the most valued craftsmen of the village, and their simple tools demanded exceptional skill.

Today

Although industrialisation has greatly reduced the demand for handmade objects, the craft survives through dedicated artisans and is entered in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Moldova. The techniques and decorative motifs of traditional gates are showcased through philatelic series, folk craft fairs and village museums, which keep alive an art that has always accompanied country life, from the cradle to the wayside cross at the edge of the road. Interest in handmade objects has been reborn in recent years, and the works of folk craftsmen are sought after both by collectors and by those who wish to bring into the home a touch of the warmth and authenticity of wood worked according to ancestral custom.
