Valul lui Traian

The wine region of south-western Moldova, named after the Roman rampart of the emperor Trajan. The warm continental climate is ideal for full, structured red wines. It extends across the districts of Hîncești, Leova, Cantemir and Cahul.

Valul lui Traian is the wine region of south-western Moldova and one of the country's three areas with protected geographical indication (IGP), alongside Codru and Ștefan Vodă. Its name comes from the ancient Roman earthworks that cross southern Moldova, historical evidence of an antique presence in this zone and of a tradition linking the region to the millennial history of the continent. The region extends across the country's southern districts, including the Cahul area and its surroundings, as well as part of the Gagauzia autonomous unit.

Climate and terroir

The region enjoys the warmest and sunniest climate in Moldova, a continental climate with southern influences, with long, hot summers and a high number of sunny days per year. The clay soils, rich in trace elements, together with the abundant heat and the extended autumns, favour sugar accumulation, intense colour and a marked aromatic concentration in the grapes. This generous terroir gives rise to full, powerful, concentrated and expressive wines that fully express the warm, sun-filled character of the Moldovan south-west.

Grape varieties and wine styles

Valul lui Traian produces both robust red wines and surprisingly aromatic whites. Among the red varieties grown with success are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Saperavi and the natives Rară Neagră and Fetească Neagră, which take full advantage of the area's warmth. Among the whites, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel and the aromatic Moldovan variety Viorica stand out, the latter giving intensely perfumed wines. The region's wines are distinguished by their body, aromatic intensity and deep pigmentation, and are valued for their concentrated character and expressive power, often with good ageing potential.

Benchmark wineries

The region hosts modern, dynamic wineries oriented both towards characterful reds and aromatic whites, many of them open to wine tourism and recognised for their innovative approach. Among the area's representative producers is Gitana Winery, located near the river Prut, as well as other producers making the most of the potential of the warm terroir and the rich soils of the south-west. Thanks to the distinct character and rising quality of its wines, Valul lui Traian has established itself as one of the most promising and dynamic regions for Moldova's full, expressive wines.
