Prutul de Jos

Raionul Cahul

A biosphere reserve recognised by UNESCO, centred on Lake Beleu, at the southern extremity of the country. This wetland of international importance is a paradise for birds and an ideal place for nature watching.

The Prutul de Jos reserve lies in Cahul district, at the south-western extremity of the Republic of Moldova, and has at its centre Lake Beleu, an extensive wetland in the lower floodplain of the Prut. Established in 1991 and covering almost 1,700 hectares, a good part of which is taken up by the lake's waters, the reserve protects an aquatic and floodplain ecosystem of particular ecological value.

Lake Beleu and the wetlands

Lake Beleu is a relic of the old bed of the Prut, fed by the river's floods and by natural channels. The still waters, the expanses of reed and bulrush, as well as the floating reed mats form a mosaic of habitats ideal for wildlife. The water level varies with the regime of the Prut, and in spring, during the floods, the floodplain turns into a vast expanse of water and marsh. The place is internationally recognised as an area of importance for aquatic and migratory birds, being an essential stopover on the migration routes.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation comprises almost 200 plant species, dominated by reed, bulrush, willows and aquatic plants such as water lilies. The Red Book of Moldova records rare species here, among them the white water lily, salvinia natans and the floating water chestnut. In the lake's waters live over 30 fish species — carp, crucian carp, pike, catfish and others, including rare species such as the sterlet — while among the mammals are the otter, the stoat and the mink. The wealth of birdlife, with numerous species of marsh and migratory birds, makes the reserve one of the most valuable places in the country for birdwatching.

Protection status

Besides its status as a strict scientific reserve, in 2018 the area received the title of Biosphere Reserve under the aegis of UNESCO — the first of its kind in the Republic of Moldova — extended over a much larger surface that takes in several settlements in the Prut floodplain.

Getting there

Access is from the village of Slobozia Mare and the town of Cahul, at the southern extremity of the country. Visiting the strictly protected zones is regulated, but boat trips on the lake and birdwatching, organised with local guides, offer one of the finest nature experiences in southern Moldova. The most suitable periods for a visit are spring and autumn, when bird migration is in full swing and the Prut floodplain reveals its full wealth of life.

The format is a buffet: you choose from the trays, pay at the till and eat on the spot. Lux Palace is on bulevardul Victoriei, one of the central arteries in Cahul. The hours take it out of the evening-restaurant category: open daily between eight in the morning and six in the evening. It is an address for lunch and for daytime events, not for a late dinner — all the more useful for groups crossing southern Moldova during the day. It takes children and groups, accepts bookings and has vegetarian options. Parking is on the street, free. Dogs are not admitted.
