Cahul district is located in the south-western part of the Republic of Moldova and is one of the most important districts in the South Development Region. Its seat is the municipality of Cahul, the second largest town in the south of the country and an economic, university and cultural centre of reference for the entire region. The district borders Cantemir to the north, Taraclia and Gagauzia to the east, Romania to the west, along the Prut, and Ukraine to the south.
Geography
The territory extends across the lower Prut floodplain and the Budjak plain, and is considered one of the warmest and driest areas of Moldova, with higher temperatures than in the rest of the country. To the south, the village of Giurgiulești marks the southernmost point of the republic and provides Moldova's only access to the Danube, through a port terminal. In the floodplain lies Lake Beleu, part of the Lower Prut reserve. The district covers approximately 1,545 km², and the population, according to the 2014 census, was around 105,324 inhabitants, with a density of about 68 inhabitants per km².
Economy
The district's economy is agricultural and agro-industrial. Cereals, sunflower, grapevines and vegetables are cultivated, and viticulture and winemaking have a long tradition. The port terminal at Giurgiulești gives the district a strategic role in the country's foreign trade. The municipality of Cahul concentrates food industry, trade, services and higher education.

History
The town of Cahul was officially founded in the first half of the 19th century, on the site of older settlements, becoming a county centre in Bessarabia. Important battles between the Russian and Ottoman armies took place nearby in the 18th century. In the interwar period Cahul was a county seat within Romania, and after 1944 it was incorporated into the Moldavian SSR. The district is linked to notable figures of culture, among them the much-loved folk music performer Nicolae Sulac. Through its university municipality, the port terminal at Giurgiulești and the spa resort, Cahul district combines an agricultural vocation, port potential and spa tourism, being one of the most important poles of southern Moldova.

Palatul de Cultură „Nicolae Botgros”
Palatul de Cultură „Nicolae Botgros” is the main performance venue in the town of Cahul, on Bulevardul Victoriei in the town centre. It is named after the violinist and conductor Nicolae Botgros and hosts the cultural life of the town and the district. It is one of the few public buildings in Moldova that is fully accessible for people with disabilities — entrance, parking, toilet and seating in the hall. Bustul lui Ioan Vodă
The bust of Ioan Vodă in Cahul commemorates the ruler of Moldavia who rose against Ottoman domination and died in 1574, after the battle fought in the area south of Lake Cahul. The monument stands on Strada Bogdan Petriceicu-Hașdeu, in the town centre, freely accessible at all times. It is a memorial marker rather than a destination in its own right, but it links the modern town directly to a decisive episode in the history of the Principality of Moldavia.

Pensiunea ”La gura cuptorului”
