Greco-Roman wrestler, awarded the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, contributing to the first Olympic successes of independent Moldova.

Serghei Mureico (b. 2 July 1970) is a former Greco-Roman wrestler in the heavyweight category, who represented the Republic of Moldova until 1996 and subsequently Bulgaria. His name is tied to a historic moment for Moldovan sport: he was the first athlete to bring the Republic of Moldova an Olympic medal.

Olympic achievement

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Serghei Mureico won the bronze medal in the men's Greco-Roman wrestling event, super-heavyweight category, thus becoming the first athlete to obtain an Olympic medal for the independent Republic of Moldova, of any colour. This achievement opened the way for the country's Olympic tradition. He also took part in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.

Career

Between 1993 and 2004, Serghei Mureico won eleven medals at the World and European Championships, often facing his great rival, the legendary Russian wrestler Aleksandr Karelin, considered one of the strongest athletes in the history of wrestling. Mureico obtained his only major international title in 1997, in Karelin's absence. The latter, for his part, named Mureico one of his most difficult opponents.

Through his strength, consistency and longevity at the highest world level, Serghei Mureico remains a pioneer of Moldovan competitive sport, the man who opened the list of the Republic of Moldova's Olympic medallists and inspired the following generations of wrestlers.

A pioneer of Moldovan Olympism

The bronze medal won by Serghei Mureico at Atlanta 1996 had an enormous symbolic value: it was the first Olympic distinction in the history of the independent Republic of Moldova, opening the country's list of medallists. His out-of-the-ordinary physical strength and his technique kept him in the world elite of the super-heavyweight category for more than a decade, taking part in three consecutive editions of the Olympic Games. His rivalry with the legendary Aleksandr Karelin remained memorable in the history of wrestling. Through his career, Mureico demonstrated that a small country can produce champions capable of competing with the greatest powers of world sport.
