A weightlifter, the first and only athlete from the Republic of Moldova with Olympic gold in an individual event. He became Olympic champion at Barcelona 1992, in the 75 kg category, having also won the world title in 1990.

Tudor Casapu (b. 18 September 1963, Mingir, Hâncești district) is a former weightlifter, Olympic champion and the only winner of an Olympic gold medal in an individual event in the history of the Republic of Moldova. Coming from a large family of ten children, he was initially drawn to music, playing the cimbalom in the school band, before dedicating his life to weightlifting.

Career

Tudor Casapu was part of the Soviet Union's national squad between 1984 and 1992, a period in which he achieved exceptional results. He became a four-time champion of the USSR in the years 1987–1990 and world champion in 1990, in Budapest, while also winning several medals at the European and World Championships. His strength, technique and consistency made him one of the most formidable weightlifters in his category.

The Olympic triumph

The crowning moment of his career came on 30 July 1992, at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, where Tudor Casapu became Olympic champion in the 75 kg category, with a total of 357.5 kg (155 kg in the snatch and 202.5 kg in the clean and jerk). It was a historic achievement: the first — and, to this day, the only — Olympic gold medal won by the Republic of Moldova in an individual event, secured only a few years after independence.

Legacy

With this success, Tudor Casapu entered the pantheon of Moldovan sport for good, becoming a symbol of national achievement and a source of inspiration for the generations that followed. After the end of his career he continued to be involved in sporting life, serving as honorary president of the Weightlifting Federation of the Republic of Moldova and promoting the sport in the country.

The only Olympic champion

Tudor Casapu's achievement at Barcelona 1992 remains unique in the history of the Republic of Moldova: no other Olympic gold medal has since been won by a Moldovan athlete in an individual event. His triumph, coming at a difficult moment for the young independent state, carried a strong symbolic charge. After retiring, Casapu became involved in promoting weightlifting and in training young athletes. His name is constantly invoked as a benchmark of excellence in Moldovan sport, and his success continues to inspire generations of weightlifters.
