Conacul "Zamfir Ralli-Arbore"

At Dolna, a village in Strășeni district surrounded by the Codri forests, stands the preserved manor house of the Ralli-Arbore boyar family, the place where Aleksandr Pushkin stayed during his exile in Bessarabia in 1820. Today it operates as a museum, with a manor interior and a park around it. It is one of the few ensembles of its kind open to the public in Moldova and, thanks to its natural setting, one of the most enjoyable day trips from Chișinău.

Few places in Moldova combine literary history and landscape as naturally as the village of Dolna. The manor of the Ralli boyars, the family of Zamfir Ralli-Arbore, hosted Aleksandr Pushkin during his exile in Bessarabia in 1820 — an episode that tied the name of the place permanently to Russian literature and to the theme of the Gypsies of the Codri.

What you'll see

The visit has two parts. The first is the manor building, arranged as a museum: rooms with period furniture and objects, documents and material about the owning family and the poet's stay. The second is the setting — the park around the manor and the forest at the edge of the village, which explains why the boyars chose to build their summer residences here. Visits are usually accompanied, and the guide's explanations make the difference, because much of the value of the place lies in the story rather than the number of exhibits.

Getting there

Dolna is in Strășeni district, roughly 50 km from Chișinău, in the heart of the Codri — around an hour by car on roads that narrow on the final stretch. A car is the practical option; public transport struggles to reach village level, and returning the same day requires planning. Parking is in front of the site. Alternative ways of travelling are described in the transport section, and the trip appears frequently in the organised tour programmes from the capital.

When to go

The museum is closed on Mondays; Tuesday to Saturday it runs from 10:00 to 16:00, and on Sunday from 08:30 to 16:00. The day ends early, so set out from Chișinău in the morning. The place looks its best in spring and in the second half of October, when the surrounding forest changes colour. A phone call ahead on 0237 58 271 helps, especially out of season.

Good to know

  • Allow 1–2 hours for the museum and the park, plus the travel time both ways.
  • The entrance to the building is not adapted for wheelchairs.
  • The place suits children, especially combined with a walk in the forest.
  • It fits well with the rest of the heritage sights and other places to visit in the centre of the country.
  • The Codri area has many wineries open to the public — a logical continuation of the day.
