Chișinău's zoo has been running since the second half of the 1970s and is the largest institution of its kind in the country. The collection includes rare and endangered species, and the grounds include a lake with waterfowl and a large aviary, which are also the most visited sections. The site is extensive, with long paths between areas, so a full circuit takes two to three hours of walking.

It is a family destination first and foremost, but it remains relevant for an adult visitor who wants to see what the south of the city looks like beyond the housing blocks. The accessibility provision is above the average for sights in Chișinău: adapted parking, accessible entrance and accessible rest areas.

Getting there

The address is 50/7 Bulevardul Dacia, in the Botanica district. From Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard it takes about twenty minutes by car; there is also direct public transport along Bulevardul Dacia. Parking is generous — with free, paid and on-street options — which is rare in Chișinău. Check the route on the map.

When to go

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, from 09:00 to 20:00, with Monday as the closing day — an important detail, because many museums in the city are also closed on Mondays. The best window is the morning, just after opening, when the animals are active and the paths empty. In summer, the afternoon is hot on the open routes; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons.

What to combine it with

The Botanical Garden and the Village Museum are a few minutes away, in the same southern half of the city, and the Sarmizegetusa public garden rounds off the area. A day devoted to the south of the capital — zoo in the morning, botanical garden in the afternoon — works without long journeys and without the traffic in the centre.
