Muzeul de Istorie al Orașului Chișinău operates at 60A Strada Alexei Mateevici, a few streets from the main boulevard, and is the only institution devoted exclusively to the story of the capital — from the market town on the Bâc to the city of today.

Unlike the national museums, which cover the whole country, this one deals strictly with Chișinău. It is exactly what you need on your first day if you want to understand why the city looks the way it does: how it grew out of a market town, how the centre's grid of straight streets was laid out, what was lost in the war and what was built afterwards. The collection is of reasonable size and takes an hour to go round.
It is a small museum on a small budget, and should be approached as such — the value lies in the information about the city, not in the display design. Getting there
The address is 60A Strada Alexei Mateevici, in the Centru district, south-west of Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard. You can walk there from the centre in about fifteen minutes, uphill along Mateevici, or reach it in a few minutes by public transport. There is no adapted parking space, and parking in the area is on-street. Check the route on the map.
When to go
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00, with Monday as the closing day — the same as at the national museums, which means Mondays have to be built around outdoor sights. The quietest window is the morning, between 10:00 and 12:00. Being an indoor museum, it works perfectly as a fallback on a rainy day.
What to combine it with
Strada Mateevici takes you straight into the university area, where the Moldova State University Museum also stands, and from there you drop down to the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, on Kogălniceanu. Three museums in half a day, all within walking distance.
