Muzeul Național de Etnografie și Istorie Naturală (National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History)

The Muzeul Național de Etnografie și Istorie Naturală stands at 82 Mihail Kogălniceanu Street, a few minutes from the centre, in a building whose oriental-inspired façade is itself one of Chișinău's architectural landmarks. It covers both natural history and traditional Moldovan culture, and has a garden.

What you'll see

This is the oldest museum in Moldova and, in terms of subject, the most unusual: under one roof you get natural history sections — geology, fauna, palaeontology — alongside ethnographic displays, with peasant interiors, folk costume, tools and household objects. The dioramas and the large exhibits in the natural history section are what stay with you, especially with children.

The building is worth seeing from the outside too: the richly decorated, oriental-inspired façade is one of the most photographed in the city. Behind it there is a garden, which forms part of the visit in the warmer months. Allow between an hour and a half and two hours. The traditional culture side is covered in the traditions and culture section.

Getting there

The address is 82 Mihail Kogălniceanu Street, in the city centre, south-west of Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard. It is about a ten-minute walk from the centre. There is free on-street parking nearby, which is rare within the central perimeter. There is, however, no accessible parking space for disabled visitors.

When to go

Hours vary by day: Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:00 to 18:00, Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Monday is the closing day. The quietest window is early morning, before school groups arrive. In the warmer months, leave time for the garden at the back, which is not visible from the street.

What to combine it with

It is a few minutes from the Muzeul Național de Artă a Moldovei and the Muzeul Național de Istorie a Moldovei, both on 31 August 1989 Street, and from the Muzeul de Istorie al Orașului Chișinău on Mateevici. The area is effectively the capital's museum quarter and can fill an entire day without transport.

If traditional culture interests you, the natural next step is the Muzeul Satului in the south of the city, where vernacular architecture can be seen at full scale. For the cuisine the objects on display belong to, see the food and drink section, and for the rest of the sights, the Chișinău guide.
