Pădurea-Parc „Calea Orheiului”

What it actually is

„Calea Orheiului” does not behave like a landscaped park but like a forest that stayed attached to the city as it grew north-east. Google simply classifies it as a park, but the experience is different: beaten earth tracks instead of paved paths, mature trees instead of flowerbeds, and a quiet that settles in surprisingly quickly once you leave the last blocks of flats behind.

For a visitor with 48 hours in Chișinău, that is relevant for one precise reason: it is the quickest way to understand how the city ends. Chișinău has no classic industrial fringe to the north-east — it has forest.

What to see and do

The network of forest tracks is the main draw. They are wide enough for two people walking side by side and long enough for a good hour of walking without repeating the route. Runners use them in the morning, cyclists in the afternoon, and families come at weekends — the area is suitable for children, with no technical obstacles on the main tracks.

Don't look for infrastructure here: there are no kiosks, no sports pitches, no orientation boards. Bring water and remember the point where you came in.

When to go

Being open at all times, every day of the week, the forest imposes no timetable. In practice, though, the best hours are early morning and late afternoon, when the light falls at an angle between the trunks. Spring and autumn are the obvious seasons; in summer the dense canopy holds shade, and in winter the tracks become slippery.

After rain, the ground stays soft for days. Boots or trainers with a treaded sole, not city shoes.

Getting there

You are in the north-east of the city, beyond the Râșcani residential area. The simplest way is by taxi or car from the centre — the drive takes under 20 minutes outside peak hours. Check the exact position on the map of sights before setting off, because the entrances to the forest are not marked.

What to combine it with in the same day

The geography takes you towards the other green spaces in the north-east. The Pădurea-Parc „Râșcani” is a few kilometres to the east and has a lake, a beach and fairground rides — a useful contrast after the forest tracks. Parcul Afgan completes the triangle.
