Parcul Afgan

A neighbourhood park, not a circuit attraction

Parcul Afgan does not appear in the standard tourist brochures, although the city administration lists it among the city's sights. Its value lies elsewhere: it shows you what everyday life looks like in the Chișinău beyond Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard.

It is on Miron Costin Street, in the north of the city, surrounded by blocks of flats. In the morning it is full of people crossing towards the transport stops, in the afternoon of children, and in the evening of neighbours out for a walk. If you want to see the city without the filter of the historic centre, this is the kind of place where you stop.

What you'll find there

Paths, mature trees and places to sit. The layout is that of a standard urban park, and the emphasis is on function: room to walk, to sit on a bench and for children to play.

The area is explicitly marked as suitable for children. The entrance is wheelchair accessible and there is accessible parking — a detail that matters if you are coming by car and need easy access.

Hours and access

The park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. There is no ticket, ticket office or closing time.

From the centre it is about 20 minutes by car. The area has public transport, but if you don't know the network, a taxi is simpler. Check the position on the map of sights — Miron Costin Street is long, and the entrances are not signposted for visitors.

When to go

There is no particular season. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, and weekend mornings are when the park shows its social role: it fills with families from the surrounding blocks.

In winter, the paths can be slippery and not all of them are cleared immediately after snow.

What to combine it with in the same day

Parcul Afgan is part of the green belt of northern Chișinău. The Pădurea-Parc „Râșcani”, with a lake and beach, is a few kilometres to the east, and the Pădurea-Parc „Calea Orheiului” closes the area to the north-east. All three can be seen in a single afternoon if you have a car.
