Parcul Țaul

The arboretum park at Țaul, in Dondușeni district, is the largest of its kind in the Republic of Moldova and one of the few historic landscape gardens preserved in the north of the country. Laid out around a former nobleman's manor, it combines broad paths, ponds and a rich collection of tree species, many of them exotic. It is a state-protected area, permanently accessible, and is best in autumn, when the colour of the foliage transforms the whole composition.

On the edge of the village of Țaul, in northern Moldova, lies the country's largest arboretum park. It is not a woodland left to its own devices but a deliberate landscape composition: laid-out paths, framed views, groups of trees arranged for their colour and silhouette, ponds that reflect their banks. The park grew up around a nobleman's manor, and that estate structure can still be read today in the way the ground is organised.

What you'll see

The dendrological collection is the main attraction: local species mixed with trees brought from other geographical areas, planted in groups meant to work as pictures seen from the paths. There are conifer sections, open meadow areas, ponds and small bridges, plus the network of paths that allows a full tour on foot.

The park has protected-area status, which means simple but firm rules: do not break branches, do not leave litter, do not drive on the paths. It is part of the Republic of Moldova's network of protected areas and one of the natural landmarks of the north.

Getting there

Țaul lies in Dondușeni district, roughly 200 kilometres north of Chișinău — about three hours' drive on the main road towards Bălți and further north. The most convenient access is by car; you can also travel by public transport as far as Dondușeni, then take a local connection to the village. Being an open park, it has no gate with opening hours and no ticket office at the main entrance.

When to go

Access is possible around the clock, any day of the week. The most striking season is autumn, between late September and mid-October, when the mix of species produces a palette of colour few places in Moldova can match. Late spring and early summer are good for long walks in the shade. In winter the paths can be covered in snow and mud.

Good to know

A full visit on foot takes two to three hours if you cover the main paths.
Suitable for children, but the ground is natural and uneven — not ideal for pushchairs.
Do not count on services on site: bring water and snacks.
Sturdy footwear, especially after rain.
