Ungheni district lies in the central-western part of the Republic of Moldova, in the Centre Development Region. Its seat is the municipality of Ungheni, an important rail and road junction on the border with Romania. The river Prut forms the state border here, and beyond it lies the municipality of Iași, in Romania, to which Ungheni is closely tied historically and economically.
Geography
With an area of approximately 1,083 km², the district has a relief of low hills and broad valleys, part of the Central Moldavian Plateau, with the middle course of the Prut crossing the territory for about 80 kilometres. The climate is temperate continental, with mild winters and warm summers, and precipitation is moderate. The soils are largely chernozems, favourable to agriculture, and the district has deposits of construction materials: clay, sand, gravel and shingle.
Population and economy
At the 2014 census the district had around 101,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most populous in the country, with a density of about 93 inhabitants/km². The population is predominantly Moldovan/Romanian (over 92%), with Ukrainian and Russian minorities. Owing to its border position, Ungheni is an important economic and logistics centre, with industry, cross-border trade and a free economic zone that has attracted investment.
Heritage and links with Romania
Ungheni is symbolically linked to Romania by the railway bridge over the Prut, designed in the 19th century, which connected Iași and Chișinău and played a significant role in the shared history of the two banks. Today the Ungheni–Iași connection remains one of the main gateways between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, including through the Iași–Ungheni gas pipeline, important for energy security. Besides the seat municipality, the district also includes the town of Cornești, as well as numerous villages with agricultural and winemaking traditions. Through its position as the country's western gateway, its economic diversity and its cross-border links, Ungheni is one of the districts with the greatest development potential in central Moldova, with an industrial tradition and close cultural ties with Iași county. The district, in its first administrative form, was established in November 1940.

Mănăstirea „Sfântul Gheorghe”

Podul Eiffel
