The geographical and symbolic centre of Chișinău

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Lord stands in Piața Marii Adunări Naționale, that is at exactly the point from which the whole centre of the capital is measured. It is a neoclassical Orthodox church, raised — according to the sources — in the fourth decade of the 19th century, with a painted interior. Around it extends the cathedral square, with walkways, benches and mature trees, and in front of the ensemble opens the city's main boulevard.

For a visitor with a single day in Chișinău, this is the stop not to be missed: it is a few steps from the central institutions, from the central park and from the artery along which the city's public events take place.

Opening hours and rules of visiting

The cathedral is open daily. From Monday to Friday the hours are between 08:00 and 16:00, while on Saturdays and Sundays they extend until 20:00 — so, if you arrive in the city in the late afternoon, the weekend gives you a considerably wider window.

Entry is free. Being an active place of worship, the usual rules apply: decent dress, shoulders and knees covered, quiet during the services and discretion with the camera. The services alter the rhythm of a visit — if you want to see the interior without disturbing anyone, avoid service hours. The main entrance is wheelchair accessible.

The city's patronal feast, on 14 October

Chișinău's patronal feast is celebrated on 14 October, at the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God. It is the day on which the city centre changes its regime entirely: traffic in the central area is restricted, the square and the boulevard fill up, and the city's ordinary schedule no longer applies.

If your aim is atmosphere, it is the best day of the year to be in Chișinău. If your aim is a quiet visit to the cathedral or a programme of moving around the city, it is exactly the day to avoid. A few practical details

The area is largely pedestrianised, and parking in the immediate vicinity of the square is difficult on working days — come on foot or by public transport if you are based in the centre. The visit itself takes 20–30 minutes; with the surrounding square and the bell tower, an hour is a comfortable allowance. For photographs, the early morning light catches the façade without the crowds.
