What Curchi is

Curchi is the largest monastic complex you can see near Chișinău without a long drive or a hard route. It stands in the village of Curchi, Orhei district, about 58 km from the capital — around an hour's drive. It is an 18th-century foundation, raised in the heart of the Codri, and in the form you see today the complex comprises two churches and a considerable area of laid-out grounds around them.

If you have time for a single monastery in Moldova and do not want to rely on country roads or steep paths, Curchi is the rational choice. It is large, it is maintained, it has parking and wheelchair access at the entrance, parking and toilets — a rare thing among the other monasteries in Moldova.

What you see there

The complex works like a small enclosed town: churches, cells, farm outbuildings, walkways, all within one set of grounds. The two churches are from different periods and the difference in scale and decoration between them reads immediately. Around them, the laid-out grounds — walkways, green spaces, plantings — turn the visit into a walk, not just a stop at the altar door.

The setting counts as much as the masonry. You are deep in the Codri massif, in a wooded depression, and the difference from the plain of the rest of the country is visible from the first kilometre. Late spring and autumn are the best moments: the light is low, the forest has colour, and the summer weekend crowds thin out.

Photography

The exterior can be photographed freely. Inside the churches, the practical rule is simple: do not photograph during the service, do not use flash and do not point the lens at worshippers. If you want shots inside, ask someone from the community — the answer is usually yes, outside service hours.

Getting there

The road from Chișinău towards Orhei is good and fully surfaced, and the turning to Curchi is signposted. Public transport exists as far as Orhei, but the last kilometres to the monastery require a solution of your own, so the car remains the predictable option. The monastery has wide opening hours, from early morning until evening, so you are not pressed for time. The gate opens at 06:00 on weekdays and at 07:00 at weekends, and closing is at 21:00.

What you should know beforehand

You need no special equipment — the ground is flat and made up, ordinary shoes are enough. It is the only large monastery on the list where this is true.

Dress matters: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a headscarf for women when entering the church. There are not always scarves at the entrance, so it is safer to have one in your backpack. Speak quietly inside the grounds, do not enter the spaces marked as belonging to the community and keep your phone on silent.

There is no entrance ticket. The donation boxes are visible; the contribution is up to you.
