What Căpriana is

Căpriana is one of the oldest monastic foundations on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and one of the most visited. It stands in the village of the same name, in the Codri massif, west of Chișinău — close enough for half a day, far enough to feel somewhere else.

Unlike the cave monasteries on the Dniester, no physical effort is needed here. The complex is flat and made up, with adapted parking, a wheelchair-accessible entrance and an adapted toilet. It is the right choice if you are travelling with elderly parents, with small children, or simply do not want a day of hiking.

What you see there

What makes Căpriana visually interesting is the layering: the buildings within the grounds come from different periods and the difference reads directly in the volumes, the proportions and the façade decoration. It is not a unified complex built in one go but a place that has added to itself over centuries.

The complex also includes a library — a rare element in the local monastic landscape and an indication of the role the monastery played as a centre of written culture, not only of prayer.

All around, the Codri forest. The hilly, wooded terrain of the area is, for many visitors, the main reason for choosing this particular road out of Chișinău. In late autumn the landscape is at its best.

Getting there

From Chișinău the road to Căpriana is short and fully surfaced — it is one of the easiest exits from the capital, suitable even for half a day taken out of a city programme. The grounds are open daily between 08:00 and 20:00, weekends included. The schedule is uniform, which simplifies planning compared with other monasteries where the hours follow the services.

What you should know beforehand

Ordinary shoes are enough; there is neither slope nor rough ground to cover. Bear in mind, though, that if you also want to walk in the surrounding forest, the ground becomes muddy after rain.

The rules of conduct are those of any active place of worship: shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women when entering the church, a low voice, phone on silent. Do not enter the areas reserved for the community, even if they are not firmly marked.

Photography outside is unrestricted. Inside, no flash and never during the service. If you come across pilgrims at prayer, do not photograph them — it is the most frequent mistake visitors make.

There is no entrance fee. Donations are voluntary.
