The monument is dedicated to the communist youth organisation and belongs to the category of public statuary raised during the Soviet decades. Today it functions above all as a document: it shows what the era's official visual language looked like — monumental scale, heroic composition, a position on a major artery.

The stop takes ten minutes and makes sense within a route that follows how layers of memory have overlapped in Chișinău: interwar monuments, Soviet ones and those raised after 1991 coexist in the same city, sometimes a few hundred metres apart. Getting there

The address is 13 Bulevardul Grigore Vieru, close to the central area, north-east of Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. From the Triumphal Arch it is roughly ten to fifteen minutes on foot, heading down towards Bulevardul Grigore Vieru. It is a busy artery with frequent public transport. The exact position is worth checking before you set out.

When to go

Access is permanent, round the clock, every day. Visit during the day, when the details of the composition are visible. In the morning the traffic on the boulevard is lighter, which helps if you want clean photographs. This is not a sight to set aside separate time for — it works best as a stop on the way to something else.

What to combine it with

It fits naturally with a walk along Bulevardul Grigore Vieru and the area around Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. The same half-day has room for the Triumphal Arch, the Grădina Publică „Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt" and the national museums on Strada 31 August 1989.
