Soroca district lies in the north of the Republic of Moldova, in the North Development Region. Its seat is the municipality of Soroca, set on the right bank of the Dniester, which here forms the state border with Ukraine. The district borders Ukraine to the east and north-east and several districts in northern Moldova, and is one of the region's most important and most history-laden centres.
Geography
With an area of approximately 1,043 km² and altitudes reaching about 347 metres, the district has a hilly relief, furrowed by deep valleys descending towards the Dniester. The river, with its high, rocky banks, defines both the landscape and the history of the area, offering some of the finest views in the north of the country. Fertile soils support productive agriculture.
Population and economy
The district's population is approximately 100,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most populous in the north of the country. The majority is of Moldovan/Romanian ethnicity, with Ukrainian, Russian and Roma communities; the town of Soroca is in fact one of the main centres of the Roma community in Moldova. The economy is based on agriculture, the food and processing industries, and cross-border trade.
Heritage and tourism
The district's main site is Soroca Fortress, a medieval stronghold raised in the time of Stephen the Great and rebuilt in stone by Petru Rareș, which guarded an old ford across the Dniester; it is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Moldova, with a characteristic circular plan. On a hill near the town rises the Candle of Gratitude, a beacon-monument dedicated to the memory of forebears, which offers a panoramic view over the Dniester. To these is added the Gypsy Hill, known for the spectacular architecture of the houses of the Roma community. All of this makes Soroca an emblematic tourist destination of northern Moldova. The town of Soroca, sometimes nicknamed "the capital of the Roma", has a long history, attested since the Middle Ages, and preserves a centre with heritage buildings and churches. The district, in its first administrative form, was established in November 1940 and went through several territorial reorganisations before reaching its present configuration.

Lumânarea Recunoștinței (The Candle of Gratitude)
A monument raised on the rocky bank of the Dniester at the edge of Soroca, Lumânarea Recunoștinței is visible from a distance but has to be earned on foot: a long stairway climbs from the valley to the base of the stone tower, and from the top a wide view opens over the river and the hills beyond the water. It is one of the symbolic landmarks of the country's north, dedicated to the memory of those who preserved the language and history of these lands.
