Ștefan Vodă district lies in the south-east of the Republic of Moldova, in the South Development Region. Its seat is the town of Ștefan Vodă. The district borders Ukraine to the east and south, the state border following in part the course of the lower Dniester, the river that crosses the territory and has shaped the landscape and economy of the area.
Geography
With an area of approximately 998 km², the district occupies an area of low plain in the south-east of the country, with a gently undulating relief and fertile soils favourable to agriculture. Its proximity to the Dniester and its estuary gives the region a mild microclimate, particularly suited to viticulture, one of the oldest occupations of its inhabitants.
Population and economy
At the 2014 census the district had around 62,000 inhabitants, the majority of Moldovan/Romanian ethnicity (over 93%), with Ukrainian, Russian, Roma, Gagauz and Bulgarian minorities. The economy is deeply shaped by viticulture and wine production. In the east of the district lie the Purcari vineyard and estates, one of the oldest and most prestigious winemaking regions of Moldova, whose wines were awarded at international competitions as early as the 19th century and are today recognised worldwide.
History and heritage
In the period between the end of the 16th century and 1812, part of these territories were under Ottoman and Tatar rule, known as the "khan's villages". Besides the renowned wineries at Purcari, the district offers landscapes typical of the lower Dniester floodplain and of the south-eastern vineyards, with villages that preserve old winemaking traditions. The winemaking tradition remains the district's calling card, attracting a growing number of tourists interested in wine tourism and local gastronomy. To these are added the landscapes of the Dniester floodplain, villages with traditions and proximity to the sea via transport routes, which give the south-east of the district growing economic and tourism potential, particularly through wine tourism at Purcari. Through its position on the border with Ukraine and on the lower course of the Dniester, its winemaking tradition and its fertile soils, Ștefan Vodă district is one of the areas representative of southern Moldova. The district, in its first administrative form, was established in November 1940 and went through several territorial reorganisations over time.
