Fetească Neagră
The most highly regarded native red variety, grown for centuries across the Romanian lands. "The black maiden" gives intense, velvety wines with aromas of dried plums, sour cherries and spice, and remarkable ageing potential.
Fetească Neagră is without doubt the most prestigious native red variety of the Romanian and Moldovan lands, considered one of the oldest varieties in this part of Europe, with origins in the zone between the Carpathians and the Dniester. Over time it has become a symbol of authentic winegrowing and of national identity in wine, prized for its noble character and for its remarkable ability to reflect the terroir in which it is grown.
The grapes have deep violet berries, cylindrical-conical in shape, covered by a thick bloom, and the variety is notable for its good frost resistance, withstanding low temperatures that make it suited to Moldova's continental climate. In the Republic of Moldova the area planted to Fetească Neagră is more modest than that of the international varieties, but it is steadily gaining ground as producers rediscover the variety's quality potential. It is grown in several regions, with remarkable results in the centre and south of the country.
Characteristics of the wine
Fetească Neagră wines stand out for the balance between fruit, structure and spice notes. In the glass they reveal aromas of ripe or dried plums, black fruit, sour cherries and blackberries, completed by accents of pepper, cloves, chocolate or cinnamon, depending on the winemaking style. These are wines of medium to full body, with well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity, and good ageing potential, particularly when matured in oak barrels, which adds roundness, depth and elegant tertiary notes.
Food pairings
Fetească Neagră goes excellently with substantial dishes: beef and lamb roasts, game, spiced stews, but also with sarmale or traditional Moldovan roast, in which the variety's tannins balance the richness of the food handsomely. Matured cheeses and grilled meats seasoned with aromatic herbs are also an inspired partner for this characterful wine.
Many Moldovan wineries vinify Fetească Neagră, both as a single-variety wine and in blends with Rară Neagră and with Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, contributing to the international standing of Moldova's native red wines and to the promotion of a distinct winegrowing identity anchored in local tradition.
