Rară Neagră is an emblematic native red variety of the Republic of Moldova, with a very old winegrowing tradition in the lands between the Prut and the Dniester. Known over time under numerous local and regional names, the variety was long used alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Saperavi in the blend of the historic Purcari wine, contributing decisively to the international fame of Moldovan red wines as far back as the nineteenth century. Today it is considered a genuine treasure of the national winegrowing heritage.

Rară Neagră is sensitive to frost, which is why it is not grown in the north of the country, preferring the warmer, gentler areas of the south. The most important plantings are in the Cahul district, followed by the Ștefan Vodă zone and Gagauzia, where the warm climate and rich soils allow it to express its delicate, aromatic character fully. A late-ripening variety, it needs long, sunny autumns to reach optimal maturity.

Characteristics of the wine

Rară Neagră wines have a ruby-red colour, light to medium body and a distinct aromatic profile, with notes of red fruit such as tart cherries and dried plums, completed by fine floral tones of violet, peony and iris. On the palate the wine is elegant and supple, with a high acidity that gives it vivacity and a tonic, slightly refreshing edge on the finish. It is a variety that produces delicate, refined wines, in strong contrast to the massive, opaque structure of Saperavi or the firm tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes it valuable both on its own and in blends where balance is sought.

Food pairings

Thanks to its moderate body and lively acidity, Rară Neagră suits dishes that are not too heavy: poultry, roast pork, light stews, pasta and medium cheeses. It is a versatile wine, pleasant at lighter meals or in the warm season, when it can even be served slightly chilled, alongside traditional Moldovan cooking and summer grills.

Rară Neagră is vinified by benchmark wineries such as Purcari, Château Vartely and other prestigious estates, both as a fine single-variety wine and in historic blends, and is one of the most prized and most representative native varieties of Moldova, an ambassador of Moldovan wine identity in the world.
