Fetească Regală

Fetească Regală is a relatively young white grape variety, the result of a natural crossing between Fetească Albă and Grasă de Cotnari, which appeared in the Romanian and Moldovan lands in the first half of the twentieth century. Although more recent than its native relatives, the variety established itself quickly thanks to its good productivity, remarkable adaptability and resistance to climatic conditions, coming to be planted over significant areas in several countries in the region.

Fetească Regală is characterised by medium-sized yellow-green berries arranged in cylindrical-conical bunches, and by a high sugar concentration that can reach generous levels at full ripeness, which makes it suitable for a wide range of wine styles. In the Republic of Moldova it is grown in several wine regions, a versatile variety valued both for still white wines and as valuable raw material for sparkling wine production.

Characteristics of the wine

Fetească Regală wines are usually dry, fresh and aromatic, with a lively acidity that gives them vivacity and balance. In the glass one finds aromas of meadow flowers, freshly cut hay, green apple, citrus and slightly mineral notes, in a clean and expressive whole. The style is generally fruity and fresh, ideal for drinking young, although more concentrated examples can support a short period of maturation in which they gain complexity. The variety is often used to make balanced sparkling wines as well, thanks to its natural acidity.

Food pairings

Thanks to its freshness and acidity, Fetească Regală suits starters, salads, fish, seafood, white meat and fresh cheeses. It is an excellent wine for summer meals and light dishes, but it also copes well alongside plăcinte, vegetable dishes and traditional Moldovan preparations that are not too heavy, making it a versatile and approachable table companion.

Many Moldovan wineries grow Fetească Regală, using it both as a single-variety wine and in white blends alongside Fetească Albă, Sauvignon Blanc or Aligoté. This flexibility and its fresh character confirm the important role the variety plays in the landscape of native white wines, forming a bridge between local tradition and modern consumer tastes.
