Viorica

An aromatic white variety created in the Republic of Moldova, highly perfumed, with intense notes of flowers and exotic fruit. One of the most expressive and modern Moldovan white wines.

Viorica is an aromatic white grape variety created in the Republic of Moldova, the fruit of native viticultural research and a genuine source of national pride. The variety was obtained in 1969 by Moldovan researchers, through a crossing whose parent forms were Seibel 13-666, of French origin, and Aleatico, of Italian origin. Surprisingly, although both parent forms are often associated with coloured varieties, the result was a strikingly perfumed white variety, which makes Viorica one of the most successful and most original Moldovan viticultural creations.

Well adapted to local conditions, the variety is grown in several of Moldova's wine regions and is valued for its hardiness and for its remarkable aromatic intensity. Viorica has gained significant popularity in recent years, becoming a variety that symbolises the identity of Moldovan white wines and an authentic expression of local viticultural innovation, and is increasingly present in the portfolios of wineries oriented towards characterful wines.

Characteristics of the wine

Viorica wines have a straw-yellow colour with green reflections and an intense floral and fruity bouquet, with distinctive aromas of acacia blossom, jasmine, linden and basil, as well as tropical fruit and citrus. On the palate the wine is fresh, aromatic and balanced, with a lively acidity that supports its expressiveness and freshness. It is prized for its perfumed character and its vivacity, a wine drunk with great pleasure in youth, when its primary aromas are at their peak. It is made in both dry and off-dry versions.

Food pairings

Viorica's exuberant aromatic profile recommends it for starters, salads, fish, white poultry meat and lightly spiced dishes. It pairs particularly well with Asian cooking, especially spicy dishes or those with sweet-and-sour notes, and with fruit-based desserts, above all in the off-dry versions. Its floral character also makes it an excellent aperitif wine, served well chilled.

Viorica is vinified by several Moldovan wineries, often as an expressive single-variety wine, but also in memorable blends. The best-known such combination is the one with Muscat Ottonel, made by the Purcari winery, which draws on the aromatic explosion of this native variety to offer a delicate, intensely perfumed white wine, representative of the creativity of Moldovan viticulture.
